Cirrhosis is defined as an advanced stage of scarring on the liver. It’s usually caused by liver diseases, which can be contracted through hepatitis or heavy drinking and alcohol abuse.

It occurs when the cells in the liver become damaged and are instead then replaced by scar tissue (also known as fibrosis). If it’s caught early enough, it can be managed and slowed down to ensure that the patient still has quality of life and the ability to continue on as normal as possible without suffering too much.

However, if it’s left too late, or is allowed to develop with no medical intervention or life style changes, it can very quickly become life threatening and dangerous.

A common cirrhosis definition is a degenerative disease. It means that it continues to deteriorate.

There is not yet a cure for this condition, only treatments designed to reduce the effects and increase the amount of time it takes for the condition to become critical.

A liver that is affected by cirrhosis will go through a change in its structure and the processes that it can perform.

A healthy liver is able to help remove toxins from the blood, and process any substances that go through it.

Cirrhosis disables the liver from being able to do this and can lead to a build-up of toxins in the blood and the inability to process protein or hormones. The body suffers without the functions that the liver provides and it can affect other organs and cause them to begin failing if they’re not receiving the products they need from the liver.

This also includes the brain, which can suffer without the hormones being processed and the toxins being broken down before they can reach it.

Cirrhosis is not a singular issue – it is used to define a group of diseases that destroy the functions and structure of the liver and stop it from working correctly and can cover a range of different inflictions; the different types can sometimes require different treatments and lifestyle changes and it’s best to check with your doctor which one you have and what you can do at home to decrease your likelihood of it progressing quickly.

Cirrhosis definitions change depending on the individual’s situation.

Sometimes it can be defined as an illness that restricts blood flow through the liver, other times a cirrhosis definition is where the liver lobules become packed with fat, which then turns in to scar tissue.

All cirrhosis definitions, however, have the same outcome and the condition can still lead to serious liver failure regardless of which definition the patient has received for their condition.

Patients who suffer from liver illness can also contract jaundice, which makes the patient’s body look yellow in appearance, including the whites of their eyes and their nails.
